- SOURCE AND NOTES:
Elijah McCurdy, Jr. was a farmer in the 1850 ( AL Census, District # 24 ): Elijah McCURDY, Jr. was born
November 18, 1798 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He was the son of Elijah McCURDY, Sr. and Ann
HANDY HARRIS. Elijah married Rosa Ann JONES in 1824. He was a pioneer settler in the Mount Hermon Community now known as Pine Ridge, on Highway # 35 near Fort Payne, Alabama. He moved from Lincoln County, Tennessee to Limestone County, Alabama and then to the newly created county of
DeKalb , following the removal of the Indians. He brought his family with him and two slaves named Ben
and Cato. Ben was left to Elijah, Jr. by his mother ( See Will of Ann H. McCurdy in The McCurdy Family,
Early Settlers of DeKalb County, Alabama, 1986, by Hershellene Peek McCurdy and Howard McCurdy ).
and according to family tradition Cato was given to his wife, Rose Ann Jones McCurdy, by her parents.
Elijah, Jr. owned land in the Mount Hermon Community and one day while watching his livestock graze on a hill beneath a large hickory tree, he selected that spot as his burial site. This hill with its view of ridges and mountains became known as Mount Hermon Cemetery. While Elijah, Jr. died November 20, 1875 at 77 years of age in DeKalb County, Alabama, he was the first to be buried there. He and his wife are buried in a rock enclosure. ( 1434471BJL.ged )
Rose Ann Jones was the daughter of John and Mary Jones from Ireland. Their children were;
Eliza Jane McCurdy ( born September 17,1826 ), General Nathaniel Warren McCurdy ( born Sept. 21,1832 ), John Andrew ( born 1836), Rebecca Ann "Becky" ( born January 17,1838 ), Lourainey " Rainey"
( Born Sept 18,1843), Martha " Bob" ( born April 1847 ), Nancy Palestine ( born 1852 ), William ( born?)
The McCurdy men were fox hunters and William McCurdy died after a night hunt.
